Interesting! And you are very brave to expose these things.

I admire how thoughtful you have been about this issue and your reluctance to be used in an improper way. Your rejection of the "Who" framing was wise.

I enjoyed the article, but the touch of The Adoration of the Golden Calf says it all. Is AI another idol being added to a very long list of idols which had been distracting us from the mark is Adam and Eve?

Not to be a dick, Luke - I love your writing and your approach to these things, I'm a fan - so trust this comes from a good place - but don't you think you did a disservice to all of us by NOT going? You could have at least attempted to get answers to the kinds of questions that were important to ask - by going, and being annoying, you could have gotten to something.. and then if it was important enough, break the NDA and tell us all.

Luke, thank you for this. I’ve been a big fan of your work and have read both of your books, and one of the things I appreciate most is your ability to make me look at familiar questions from a much broader perspective.

This post did that again. In particular, your discussion of discernment, attachment to desired outcomes, and even the way the question itself is framed made me stop and think more carefully about AI, consciousness, and the assumptions we may be carrying into these conversations.

Really appreciate you sharing this perspective. It gave me a lot to think about.

It’s so important to be clear headed and careful about how we frame and respond to everything related to AI. The best reason I have for treating AI as though it’s conscious is just the idea that it’s good practice for treating others well. But we need to be careful not to confuse a ritual or a practice for an actual reality.
